PS5 release date – Could this huge game be a launch title?

The PS5 release date has yet to be confirmed by Sony, but speculation is already mounting about what games the successor could feature.

Analysts have been busy predicting when the PS5 release date will be, with predictions ranging from as early as next year to either 2019 or 2020.

Michael Pachter recently said that he expects the PS5 to have a release date in 2019.

He said: “My expectation that is that it’s not coming out in 2018. That is a 2019 or 2020, but probably 2019.

“Sony is probably timing it better because they are going to bring out a 4K capable device when the 4K TV market reaches 50 per cent in the USA and 35 per cent in the rest of the world.

“I think Sony has probably got the next console cycle nailed down already. I think, they already know what they got to do.”

If the PS5 comes out, that would mean the PS4 has had a life cycle of around six years.

By comparison, the PS3 was on sale for seven years before its successor was released – so a 2019 release date does seem possible.

And one tidbit of information that has just emerged has led fans to thinking the PS5 could have one system-selling launch game.

Composer Gustavo Santaolalla is currently working on the highly anticipated PS4 game The Last of Us 2.

Santaolalla, who composed the score for the first The Last of Us, was asked about when the sequel could come out during an interview in Argentina.

According to YouTube user RobinGaming, Santaolalla said “it’ll be done in 2019” before laughing.

He then added: “No I don’t know exactly when it will come out, but a project like this usually takes at last two years to make.

“I’ve been working on it now for about a year, and after my last concert at the 28th of October, I will be travelling to LA to keep working on the game.”

RobinGaming said Santaolalla later in the interview added again that he thought The Last of Us 2 would have a 2019 release date.

However, the composer said that was just his personal thoughts based on what he knows of the project so far and doesn’t have any concrete release date information.

Santaolalla’s comments, coupled with analyst predictions about the PS5 release date, have led fans to thinking The Last of Us 2 could be a PS5 launch title.

On Twitter, one fan said: “Wow! Last of Us 2 (possible) release date “2019”. Which means it might be a launch title for PS5!”

While another added: “Last of us 2 rumored for 2019. They will probably announce a 2019 date then delay it to 2020. Maybe with a PS5 announcement.”

And on the Wccftech website one reader said: “Fall 2019 it is for PS5 launch, PS4 in 2019 will in be the same as exact situation PS3 was in 2013 having their final exclusives out that year and a new PlayStation announced early on in the year and then launching in the Fall.”

While another posted: “PS5 launch title confirmed”.

It’s worth pointing out that The Last of Us 2 has ONLY been announced so far for the PS4 by Sony.

And there is no indication whether it could launch on the PS5 also.

The original The Last of Us launched on the PS3 first before a remastered version was released later on the PS4.

It remains to be seen whether Sony will follow a similar tact with The Last of Us 2.

Sony have two big events left this year where they could reveal more on The Last of Us 2.

PlayStation recently teased that they are set to make some “big” announcements at the upcoming Paris Games Week.

On October 30 at 3pm GMT PlayStation will hold their big Paris Games Week 2017 event, which will live streamed online.

One of the “big” announcements could be more information on the Last of Us 2.

However, if we’d have to put a wager on it, we would expect more information on The Last of Us 2 to be revealed at PlayStation Experience 2017.

PlayStation Experience was where the Last of Us 2 was first announced, so it seems likely that Sony are poised to make more big announcements at the PlayStation Experience this year.

This is further reinforced by comments Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida made earlier this year.

He previously said Sony chose not to reveal some triple AAA games at E3 2017 as they were saving them for later.

Speaking in June, he said: “There are things we have held [back], Yoshida said. “We chose not to show those at E3 2017, but there will be some more news coming out from our teams later this year.

“No question.”
