Today Rockstar released a trailer for another update to GTA Online. The Doomsday Heist may be the wildest update to GTA yet, and it not only adds a slew of new free content for players to dive into, but also answers some of our biggest questions about Grand Theft Auto 5.
The Mt. Chilliad Mystery
Since its release in 2013, fans have wondered what secrets lie within the stones of Mt. Chilliad in the norther section of San Andreas. Thanks to the in-game heiroglyph hidden near the mountain’s peak, many players surmised that there was a secret alien conspiracy surrounding the mountain – and they weren’t that far off.
It’s a consipiracy, for sure, but not of the extraterrestrial variety (though there’s plenty of evidence of their existence in the GTA universe). In the trailer, we see what appears to be a large nuclear missile silo, assumedly contained within the belly of the mountain.
The fact that there are anti-aircraft rocket launchers dotting the rocky peak is also a dead giveaway that something more sinister resides within.
Longtime fans also have their prayers answered in the form of personalized rocket-fueled propulsion. Not having appeared since GTA: San Andreas, players will now be able to take control of their very own jetpack, seen at the end of the trailer. Whether or not we’ll be able to purchase or obtain them for use outside the heist is unknown, but we’re hoping we can.
We actually get a good bit of story information from this trailer: your crew is recruited by Avon Hertz, a tech mogul with what appears to be limitless resources – at the very least, enough to build a Jarvis-like AI named Clifford and this sweet briefing room – to help save San Andreas from what appears to be total destruction.
From what we can gather from the trailer, it seems like someone – they say it’s probably North Korea, or Russia or China (though my money’s on the self-aware supercomputer, but that might just be because I’ve seen Terminator too many times) has managed – or is trying – to, take control of the warhead hidden inside Mt Chilliad and destroy Los Santos in nuclear hellfire.
This is possibly a result of information obtained through this IAA Leaks groups – probably the GTA verion of WikiLeaks – and the attack could potentially triggering a global war.
Something tells me that nuclear sub we see parked off the coast isn’t here to ask for directions. and it’s apparently up to you, Hertz, Lester, FIB agent Haines and whoever this lady is from the IAA to essentially save the world.
In addition to the massively powerful Orbital Cannon which we see in action around the 40-second mark, a slew of new vehicles are being added with the Doomsday update. Check out the slideshow below for all of the new vehicles shown off in the trailer.
